When Free Speech Is Not Free Speech

Liberty Without Holiness

by Kraig Kleeman

Free speech is celebrated as a cornerstone of freedom. The right to speak. To express. To say what others may not want to hear.

But not every exercise of speech honors God. And not every claim of liberty reflects righteousness.

Because free speech is not free speech when it is liberty without holiness.

The Confusion Between Permission and Purity

Freedom of speech protects the right to speak. Holiness governs the responsibility of speech.

Culture often treats the right as permission — assuming that if something can be said, it should be said. But Scripture never measures speech by legality.

It measures it by fruit.

"Is it lawful?" is not the same as "Is it holy?"

When Liberty Becomes License

Liberty becomes dangerous when it detaches from restraint.

  • Words are spoken without wisdom.
  • Opinions are shared without love.
  • Truth is wielded without humility.

Speech becomes a tool for venting rather than edifying, for winning rather than reconciling.

But holiness disciplines liberty.

It asks:

  • Does this reflect Christ?
  • Does this build or wound?
  • Does this glorify God or elevate self?

The Power of Words Is Not Neutral

Scripture is clear: words carry power.

They bless or curse. Heal or destroy. Build or tear down.

Free speech that ignores the weight of words becomes careless at best and cruel at worst.

Holiness recognizes that every word is spoken before God — not just before people.

Why Holiness Restrains Speech

Holiness does not silence truth. It purifies it.

It teaches when to speak and when to remain silent. When to confront and when to cover. When to correct publicly and when to restore privately.

Unrestrained speech says everything it thinks. Holy speech says only what it is willing to stand before God with.

When Truth Is Used as a Weapon

One of the most common abuses of free speech is using "truth" to justify harm.

  • Facts are stated without compassion.
  • Correction is delivered without care.
  • Accuracy replaces love.

But truth divorced from love is no longer redemptive.

Jesus never compromised truth — yet He never used it to humiliate.

Liberty Without Love Is Not Freedom

Freedom in the Kingdom is not the ability to say anything. It is the ability to say what honors God.

Liberty without holiness produces chaos. Liberty shaped by holiness produces peace.

One amplifies noise. The other releases life.

Why the Church Must Speak Differently

The Church is not called to mirror culture's volume. It is called to model Christ's voice.

  • Not silent — but sanctified.
  • Not passive — but precise.
  • Not fearful — but faithful.

The world does not need louder Christians. It needs holier ones.

A Call Back to Sanctified Speech

God is refining the speech of His people.

Calling them to words that heal rather than harm. Confront without contempt. Speak truth without sacrificing love.

Because holiness does not restrict freedom. It redeems it.

A Closing Word

Liberty without holiness is not freedom.

It may sound bold. It may feel empowering. It may claim righteousness.

But speech that pleases God is not measured by what is allowed — it is measured by what is aligned.

Because true freedom is not found in saying whatever we want. It is found in speaking what reflects the heart of God.
